About this Walk
For fans of history, urban development, and arts and culture, have we got a walking tour for you!
Take a trip through time and discover the history behind a hidden gem in the inner city. The former King Edward School in Marda Loop is an example of an important period in architectural construction in Calgary.
On this tour you’ll hear fascinating facts about what went into its creation; what happened when it opened its doors in 1912 and when it closed them in 2001. Left vacant and derelict for over a decade, it was bought in 2012 by a new social enterprise real estate developer, cSPACE Projects. Learn the inspiring story of how an existing building was repurposed and transformed into a LEED Gold Certified arts hub. Discover how principles of placemaking, adaptive reuse, and sustainability can inform urban development to support Calgary’s arts and culture sector, contributing to vibrant communities. On the way you’ll see gorgeous examples of Instagram-worthy public art, permanently embedded at cSPACE Marda Loop.
